A protocol for canopy cover monitoring on forest restoration projects using low-cost drones

چکیده
Abstract Remotely piloted aircrafts (RPAs) are becoming well-known for monitoring forest restoration (FR). Canopy cover percentage on a site is major indicator the early phases of FR. We present protocol to evaluate canopy using low-cost RPA and friendly computational environment. tested in six FR projects Brazilian Atlantic Forest. After processing images automatically generate digital surface model terrain model, measured QGIS by considering height thresholds model. The results had F 1 values higher than 0.9, which confirms robust methodology that does not require specific computer science or remote sensing skills. Thus, proved be accurate user-friendly measuring cover, improves during most stages. Such finding plays an important role policies future works must study tree via drones.

Forest Canopy Density Monitoring, Using Satellite Images
The increasing use of satellite Remote Sensing for civilian use has proved to be the most cost effective means of mapping and monitoring environmental changes in terms of vegetation and non-renewable resources, especially in developing countries. Data can be obtained as frequently as required to provide information for determination of quantitative and qualitative changes in terrain. Forests as...
متن کاملDetermination of suitable sampling methods for study of canopy cover in the Oak Forest
To detection of suitable sampling method to study tree canopy cover in the northern Zagros forest, Baneeh region forest, Kurdistan province, and west of Iran was selected. 40 square sample plots one hectare (100×100 m) were selected and perfect inventoried. In every sample plot the position of tree, kind of species and two diameter of crown (m) were recorded. To study of canopy cover different ...
متن کاملLow Cost UAV-based Remote Sensing for Autonomous Wildlife Monitoring
In recent years, developments in unmanned aerial vehicles, lightweight on-board computers, and low-cost thermal imaging sensors offer a new opportunity for wildlife monitoring. In contrast with traditional methods now surveying endangered species to obtain population and location has become more cost-effective and least time-consuming. In this paper, a low-cost UAV-based remote sensing platform...

متن کاملRemoving forest canopy cover restores a reptile assemblage.
Humans are rapidly altering natural systems, leading to changes in the distribution and abundance of species. However, so many changes are occurring simultaneously (e.g., climate change, habitat fragmentation) that it is difficult to determine the cause of population fluctuations from correlational studies. We used a manipulative field experiment to determine whether forest canopy cover directl...
